Someone asked me recently what do I most deeply believe, what moves me and motivates me. All I could think of was the pursuit of dreams!
I believe that dreams are attainable! But, they often elude us because we are not ready for the journey.
This thought has always been sort of my mantra. It plays in my mind like the undertone of a dramatic movie score…that my dreams are REAL…even when others don’t agree! It really grinds my gears when people tell me I can’t; or you’ll never be able to do that. Instantly, inside I’m laughing at them as my movie score begins to play and I embark on the journey to attain the unattainable! Let me put this in context. As a sophomore in college, I left school and went home to work, as my family wasn’t able to afford the rising costs of my “private liberal arts” education. While I was home with my family working for a year, so many people told me, “Oh, you’ll never return to school now! You’re working, making money and enjoying your freedom, you won’t go back to school after that”. “Hmm”, I thought, “I’ll show them”. All I have to do is be prepared for the journey. So, I worked non-stop, full-time at a bank, and part-time at a drug store to save money. I also researched scholarships and grants. I was so determined, that at one time I called the UNCF Philadelphia office EVERY day, until they granted me a scholarship! I believe they found me some money because they wanted to be rid of me once and for all! Once I got that check, I packed my bags and moved far, far away from my family (only to return again) but not without 2 very expensive degrees!
So you ask, what do I believe? What I most deeply believe, what inspires me in my work and my life is that dreams are attainable if we prepare for the work it will take to get there. This I believe, because I feel it with every fiber of my being. It drives me mad when I hear someone doubt their own ability to achieve. That’s part of what led me to work in a collegiate environment. My passion is to help young people realize that if they work hard, plan and prepare, those dreams can become reality. I am also motivated because I know that I have two younger sisters, and now 2 children, who are watching me as I deal with the adversities that come my way.
I believe that, if I line up purpose, passion and preparation, it gives way to excellence. I am motivated each day, by the fact that I am on a journey to fulfill a dream..maybe two. As I do that, I hope that my life, my journey, serves as an example to someone else who is trying to do the same!
