I Believe in Dreams!

Posted on

This post written years ago is still my motivation! What do YOU believe in?

Aspire2Higher (a2h)

Someone asked me recently what do I most deeply believe, what moves me and motivates me. All I could think of was the pursuit of dreams!

I believe that dreams are attainable!   But, they often elude us because we are not ready for the journey.

This thought has always been sort of my mantra. It plays in my mind like the undertone of a dramatic movie score…that my dreams are REAL…even when others don’t agree! It really grinds my gears when people tell me I can’t; or you’ll never be able to do that. Instantly, inside I’m laughing at them as my movie score begins to play and I embark on the journey to attain the unattainable!   Let me put this in context. As a sophomore in college, I left school and went home to work, as my family wasn’t able to afford the rising costs of my “private liberal arts” education…

Vision Work: Part 2-Using Pinterest as a Vision Board

Posted on Updated on

We have now almost made it through the 1st month of the new year, and if you haven’t already….its not too late to create a VISION BOARD for 2013!

For any new readers/visitors to this blog, I shared one of my Vision Boards and suggested creating these boards to really focus on what I call your VisionWork, back in May of 2011.We are way overdue for re-visiting this habit. Just in case there are new readers who have not done this before, below is a quick description and purpose for vision boards:

What is a Vision Board:

vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. Literally, a vision board is any sort of board on which you display images that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life.  It comes from the practice of visualization.  There are so many ways of doing this and tons of resources out there to get you started or keep your creative juices flowing if you are upgrading existing vision boards or making topic based or themed boards for other areas of your life.

What is the Purpose?

Your vision board should serve as motivation, visualization and a focal point that helps you to do the following:

  • Give life & clarity to your vision, dreams or goals
  • Provide you with daily affirmations.
  • Revive your spirit, rejuvenate you and get you excited about your vision!

This time I would like to suggest a fun, more visually appealing and even social way to create your vision board…….use PINTEREST!

Image

Pinterest is one of the latest social media platforms to gain momentum. The thing that distinguishes Pinterest from the other social media is its creative visual display of ideas. You become attracted to it because of the pictures, and each picture is linked to a blog or website. Its awesome!

For those of you who are still fearful of sharing on social media, you can create what is called Secret Boards on Pinterest!

Well, I hope you have been motivated to create a new vision board for the year and to use Pinterest to do it!  Get to work…..share your boards ( if you are so inclined) and Happy Pinning!

The Aspire2Higher Movement-Summarized

Aside Posted on Updated on

As we close the year 2012, I thought it was an opportunity for me to provide clarity to my followers/readers on the A2H Movement.  This blog/business and movement began about 3 years ago and has gained a minimal support. In order for a movement to be GREAT, those involved must be clear about the PURPOSE & GOALS.

summary

The goal of the A2H movement is for people to begin thinking differently about work.  Another one of the goals for the Aspire2Higher movement   is to re-define traditional careers in people’s minds!  The key take away from this movement is, not to allow your own fears (nor fear & judgement from others) to prevent you from re-defining traditional and creating your own success!

The Aspire2Higher Movement is about possessing some key elements of success, some of which includes having Unapologetic Ambition and Taking Charge of your Career!  We are not all born with the ability and resources to be young moguls right away….but I believe we are all born CAPABLE and become GREAT LEADERS AND ENTREPRENEURS through PERSISTENCE of GOOD HABITS and VISIONWORK!

I want EVERYONE who works to have the same enjoyable yet challenging experience I have had in my career journey. Imagine if EVERY person in the world went to work HAPPY about the CONTRIBUTION they were making to the world.  I believe this is possible and this movement will take us there!

HOW CAN YOU….Themovement

  1. You have already taken the first step by reading this blog.
  2. The next step is by spreading the word!  Tell all your family, friends and colleagues about our efforts to infiltrate our society with the ASPIRE2HIGHER MOVEMENT!  Those of us who already have defined VISIONWORK, and UNAPOLOGETIC AMBITION in working towards your VISION….it is our job to tell others how the gain that same sense of “Career Self Esteem”, which is the A2H mentality.
  3. If you are struggling to define your MISSION, & VISION, reach out to us and we can help you in developing your “message” and discerning your VISION.
  4. To further the movement please also talk about it on social media using the following #hashtags: #A2H #Visionwork #Aspire2Higher  Continue to learn and share dialogue on our Facebook Page and PLEASE follow us on Twitter and Pinterest.

To all those with questions and fears I say…….TRUST THE PROCESS-and sign up for A2H services.   These things are part of defining what your purpose, passion, and contribution will be.

SEPTEMBER is Self Improvement Month!

Aspire2Higher is ALL about IMPROVEMENT!  September can be a really stressful month with school starting back up and summer (vacations) coming to an end. Why not begin the month with SELF IMPROVEMENT in mind?

Do you have something in your life (personal or professional) that you’d love to change, improve, increase or decrease? As a full time higher education professional, my life is about to be on FULL TILT with a new semester starting. One goal I have for myself this month is to improve the way I communicate my goals, and how I communicate with people who work with me and under my supervision.  I also have been secretly trying to improve my “MOM” skills.  I want to be better prepared for my week to provide better meals for my children and spend more quality time with them.  I’ve always wanted to get better in these areas.

Let’s spend time this month focusing on the things that can help us achieve our goals! This includes reading great books, or blogs, trying new things and learning something new.  Self improvement month can be about whatever you want!  I invite you all to share here what you’d like to do for self improvement month.    Just remember this: Self Improvement is about the process of improving your thoughts, your status or your mind through your own efforts.  This should not be stressful or overwhelming if you pace yourself.  A popular piece of advice you will hear from successful people often is do something daily towards the achievement of your goals.

Notice the words that stand out the most in the image above…..IMPROVE EVERYDAY LIFE. So start there.

Happy Self Improvement Month!

Social Media Can Make You Smarter!

Posted on Updated on

20120813-210701.jpg

We all know that social media has been around for both personal and business use for several years already. Yet, I am still surprised by how many people still underestimate and under-value the depth of social media. There are still way too many people challenged by social media like it’s the modern-day rubik’s cube!

Even within my professional network of people with varying levels of education, many lines of work within multiple industries, I hear from folks who think they have no use for social media. That boggles my mind! EVERYONE, no matter what level of experience, or type of work can benefit from using social media….if used appropriately.

I will take this even a step further and venture to say that EVERYONE CAN LEARN from social media!

For example:

Educators/College and University faculty/professors
can not only use social media to engage their students outside of the classroom, but they can also use social media to share their published research, to read other relevant publications, share course updates via Facebook and gather information through social bookmarking activities.

Television personalities, producers, or writers can use social media to communicate with their audience. With social media they have a way to hear directly from them about what they want to watch or what they don’t wish to see on television. However, there is also opportunity for tv producers/writers and the like to engage in dialogue with each other about the industry through specific LinkedIn groups or TV network Facebook pages.

Medical Professionals, such as doctors & nurses lab technicians and physicians assistants can (and do) use social media for very practical reasons, like scheduling appointments and sending reminders or invoices. What some may not know is, that there are several social networking sites and uses specific to the healthcare field. Some medical professionals are using social networking sites to conduct case studies, share stories and help each other solve medical cases!

These are just a few ways that a variety of professionals benefit from using social media. But as I mentioned earlier in this post, I believe that social media is not only fun and engaging, but it can make you smarter. I for instance, used social media to discover how to blog. I use social media everyday to read about what’s happening in the world and what is relevant in my line of work. I use sites like Twitter to stay up to date on issues that would affect my life and my work. With the creation of social media, people’s access to learning has grown drastically, however, the average user only views and shares pics with their immediate connections. Well, I’ve always believed that when you know better you do better, so I challenge you after reading this to DO BETTER with social media! I want everyone who reads this blog post to find a new way to use one of your favorite social media sites TODAY!

I declare today, that no matter what you do for a living, YOU can learn and even advance your goals through intentional social media use. If the best brands in the world can use social media for business…why can’t you? If the President of the United States can advance his goals through social media….why can’t you? If a single mother, working at a small private college can use social media to grow a business….why can’t YOU?

Well, I say you can. I challenge anyone who reads this post if you cannot think of a reason or a way to use social media to get smarter, to advance your goals or to improve your work, CHALLENGE me to help you! Post on the Aspire2Higher Facebook page the reasons why you CANNOT use social media in these ways or if you feel that you CANNOT use Facebook in your specific line of work, and I will personally respond with suggestions!

Now go forth and get smarter with social media!

A Quick Message About GIFTS, PASSION & CAREER

Posted on

Image

Tonight I was inspired by the BET Awards (believe it or not)! I am a lover of music, so I tune in to all music award shows. Tonight however, one poignant moment that stands out for me was when gospel artist Yolanda Adams took a moment out of her acceptance speech to caution all the younger “popular” people attending the awards to “use your gifts responsibly”. I thought, YES! What a moment! So many of our youth listen, follow and try to emulate what they see in the media, that those who are setting the trends should take heed to be RESPONSIBLE WITH THEIR GIFT from GOD!

My mind immediately started working on how this message translates to the Aspire2Higher Movement! I started writing this blog ( and trying to write a book or two) because I wanted other people to hear, read and learn from my journey as I transform my GIFTS from GOD into a career.  I try to do this by using my natural abilities (or PASSIONS) to do the best work I can in each position I am blessed to receive.  This is the motivation behind the Aspire2Higher Movement!

As I have spent much time (i.e. paid my dues) by going through the necessary preparation (college, grad school and other training) for my VISION I have been ever mindful of where I was being led by GOD. I have not always been in cities that I loved working glamorous jobs, in fact, its been the opposite!  I have spent many years away from my family and what was comfortable and familiar to me. I believe that GOD took me to those places so that I could be STILL and realize the VISION he was birthing in me-through my career.

The “Quick” Message:

I won’t bore you with my interpretation of this. I recognize that my “giftedness” is in identifying and developing career plans and not in trying to teach messages from GOD. However, below I have shared 2 links with you to read a more in-depth article about this very message I am trying to convey.I found these articles on the Student Volunteer Movement and they describe very well how we all should be using and developing our gifts in service to others and ultimately the body of Christ.  This is what Yolanda Adams reminded us of tonight on the BET Awards. The work that we do-even if we aren’t stars or in the public eye- should be to the benefit of humankind (in some way).  We have a responsibility to not only USE OUR GIFTS, but do so in service of others.

How many of you can relate to this message?

Are you still identifying your gifts?

Have you connected your GIFTS, & Passions  to a career?

Share with us here or meet other followers of the A2H Movement and let’s talk about this more on our Facebook page!
